You already know how important the right staff are for your business. In fact I am guessing you have already hired a couple of people that didn’t work out otherwise you wouldn’t be looking at this particular blog.

So let’s start by taking a look at the current candidate market and how they perceive jobs and employment.

Candidates no longer “need” a job. The mentality that they need you and they should respect the hand that feeds them has long gone. In the current world there are so many ways to make money and survive in this world than working in a ‘Job’

Good candidates are often sought after, they know their skill set is in demand and people are willing to pay well for what they do and can offer a company.

With this in mind; how do you hire the right staff?

Recruit slowly! It can take a long time to find the perfect candidate that will suit your company culture and will truly fit with your business. Make the right decision and not a rash decision.

Listen to your candidates. Create a package that will work for your ideal candidate! It is not a one size fits all when it comes to benefits and compensation for candidates. If you are interviewing a parent – give them a 4 day week or the opportunity to choose when they work their 30 hours to fit around the kids. If you are interviewing a person who loves to travel and is telling you about all their adventures – increase their holiday allowance. It is the small things like this that will increase productivity and loyalty to your business.

How do you keep the right staff?

Respect and trust. People enjoy working for a company in which they feel valued and respected and not just on the odd occasion but all the time. Be mindful of the way you talk to and interact with your employees.

Listen. You hire the perfect employee for their skill set, you hire them because they know more than you in a particular area. Listen to them! Take on board what they know and let them implement it. They are the expert and that is why you hired them.

Take constructive feedback well. It is important to give your staff an opportunity to shape the way the business runs, after all, they are the ones that will be growing the business. Give them a simple non-judgemental way to give you feedback. Do they like the software you use? Do they not like the long daily meetings? Do they prefer to communicate on slack than on email? Listen and make the changes.
