There can be a few stages of interviews especially for high paying senior role which is why we have split our interview tips into some the most likely scenarios to better help you.

General Interview Tips

  • Use pauses in conversations to gather your thoughts
  • Answer questions concisely
  • Don’t answer questions with questions
  • Smile and be happy for the opportunity, this comes across on the phone, video or face to face
  • Don’t have one generic interview story – change it every time depending on the role that you are interviewing for, talk about your key skills for THAT job rather than everything you have ever done. Understand what job you are going for – read the spec over and over again so you can best sell your experience that matches this job
  • Don’t change you answers to the same questions in the same job application otherwise different interviewers asking the same questions may thing you aren’t telling the truth
  • Have some educated questions for them – examples – What is the growth strategy for next year and is this organic or investing in sales & marketing or by mergers or acquisition? What is it like to work here, what is the culture like?
  • If asked, it is good practice to outline your previous basic + bonus and package details and ask the line manager to make an offer that they believe reflect market rates, and the value they see your offering to the business.

Phone Interview Tips

  • Make sure you are in a quiet area
  • Make sure you have a good signal
  • Make sure your available at the agreed time
  • Remember to be clear in pronunciation, they can’t see your lips so the way you say your words are really important.

Video Interview Tips

  • Learn to use the software beforehand, check the link, call a friend and practice
  • Plan your surroundings, the background and what people can see behind you
  • Plan what you will wear and yes wear trousers! You might have to get up in an emergency like the dogs won’t stop barking or the doorbell goes.
  • Make sure you will not be disturbed by the family, animals or anything else.
  • Test your webcam and make sure it works, if someone is asking for video, they want to see you for a reason.

Face to Face Interview Tips

  • Check the location, now with Google Maps, you can even see the front door.
  • Make sure you are on time
  • Dress appropriately for the role
  • Be aware of who it is you are meeting, you can always check LinkedIn profiles so you have an idea of what they look like, their background and experience beforehand.
  • It can be hot and sweaty getting to an interview especially on public transport. Take deodorant and fragrance with you to make sure you are smelling fresh when you arrive at the interview.
